James S. Dorcely is an experienced real estate developer, investor, and entrepreneur with more than 25 years of experience in property acquisition, development, capital formation, construction financing, mortgage banking, and development strategy.
His combined development and finance background enables him to evaluate opportunities responsibly, establish realistic project budgets, secure project capital, and manage developments from acquisition and predevelopment through construction, stabilization, and long-term value creation. His experience spans affordable housing, multifamily development, adaptive reuse, and public-private partnerships.
Earlier in his career, James held leadership positions with JPMorgan Chase, Citibank, EverBank, and TIAA Bank, where he worked across mortgage banking, construction finance, capital markets, and complex real estate transactions. That institutional background informs his investment discipline at Venture Capital Developments.
James also owns and leads Edgewood Capital Group LLC, a separate real estate finance and capital advisory firm. Venture Capital Developments remains fully focused on real estate development and investment; financing and advisory support for industry colleagues is provided through Edgewood Capital Group.
As Founder and Managing Partner of Venture Capital Developments, James leads the firm’s acquisitions, value-add redevelopment, gut renovations, ground-up construction, construction oversight, project capitalization, and strategic partnerships. He has lived in Newark, owned real estate in the city, and established the firm’s local office at 625 Broad Street, Suite 240, Newark, NJ 07102.
